Grilling Safety Tips from NFPA
Charcoal and gas BBQ grills must only be used outdoors. When used indoors, or in any enclosed spaces, such as
tents, they pose both a fire hazard and also the risk of exposing occupants to potential asphyxiation and
toxic gases.
The barbecue grills should be positioned well away from siding, deck railings and out from
under eaves and overhanging branches. Place the barbecue grill a safe distance from play areas, lawn games, and
foot traffic area.
Also keep children and pets away from the grilling area: for example declare a three-foot
"safe zone" around the grill. Put out several long-handled grilling tools to allow the chef plenty
of clearance from heat and flames when flipping burgers.
Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in trays below the grill so it would not be ignited by a hot
grill.
